Did you know that the phrase, “Do not be afraid!” is one of the most repeated commands in the Bible? In the NRSV, “Do not be afraid,” appears in 70 times, while “Do not fear,” appears 58 times. It’s like God knew just how much we would struggle with fear in this Sin-sick world, and wanted to reassure us as much as possible that everything will be OK!
This Advent, we’ll dive deeper into this theme through our sermon series “Do Not Be Afraid.” Each week we’ll explore the powerful “do not be afraid” passages found in the birth narratives of Luke and Matthew, listening closely to the angelic messages that spoke peace into the fears of Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. Their stories remind us that God meets us right in the midst of our anxieties with reassurance, purpose, and hope!
